Properties of square tubing

Square tubes, also known as square tubes or hollow profiles, are impressive due to their favorable ratio of load-bearing capacity to weight. Compared to a square bar of the same size, they are less resilient, but significantly lighter as they require less material. If the material saved is used to increase the dimensions of the tube, the result is a hollow profile that has a higher load-bearing capacity than a solid profile for the same weight.

This property may seem contradictory at first glance, but it is easy to explain. If you look at the cross-section of a bar, you can see that the outer areas are subjected to exponentially greater lateral forces than the inner areas. So if you remove the material from the less stressed inner areas, you reduce the weight significantly more than you lose stability, resulting in a square tube. As steel and semi-finished products such as profile tubes are sold on the global market based on their weight, they also prove to be particularly cost-efficient.

Square tubes are available in numerous dimensions and material thicknesses. In our range alone, you will find over 100 different steel tubes with a rectangular cross-section. To make this variety clearer, they are divided into two sub-categories.

Square tubes

Square tubes are hollow profiles with a square cross-section, which means that all square tubes with edges of equal length fall into this category.

In addition, they have the same load-bearing capacity across both bending axes, which is why they are often used vertically as supports. However, they are also very popular for non-load-bearing purposes, as they are particularly robust despite their low weight and can be easily integrated into almost any construction.

Rectangular tubes

Rectangular tubes are hollow profiles with edges of different lengths. The ratio of these edge lengths can vary greatly and is selected according to the intended use.

As a rule, they are used horizontally as supports, as they have two bending axes of different strengths. If it is clear that the horizontal tube will only be loaded from above, a rectangular tube is often the better choice compared to a square tube. It offers the same load-bearing capacity at a lower weight and is therefore particularly suitable for this special application.

FAQs - Answers to your questions

What are square tubes?

Square tubes, sometimes also referred to as hollow sections or rectangular sections, are metal tubes with a rectangular cross-section, which is why they are also known as "rectangular hollow sections" (RHS) or "square hollow sections" (SHS).

What are the advantages of square tubes?

As described in more detail above, square tubes have a favorable ratio between weight and load-bearing capacity. This allows them to be used to create lightweight yet stable metal structures. They also have a less obtrusive appearance than IPE beams, which is why they are particularly suitable as a visible part of a structure.

How much do steel square tubes cost?

Unfortunately, this question is not so easy to answer in the private sector. Customers often require individual lengths, which means that labour costs for production must be included in the price. However, since every cut, regardless of length and profile dimensions, requires roughly the same amount of work, it is not possible to set a standard price per metre.

For this reason, the price in our online store is calculated in real time based on the cutting pattern and length and displayed directly. To ensure that we can offer you fair prices, both the length-based material costs and fixed processing flat rates that are independent of the size are included in the calculation.

In short: twice the length does not always mean twice the price.

Do steel square tubes rust?

Yes, our steel square tubes can rust. This is because they are made of an unalloyed structural steel called S235JR, which has no corrosion-resistant properties. Nevertheless, the material can be easily protected against rust by painting it or applying a comparable protective coating. In most cases, this is cheaper than relying on corrosion-resistant stainless steel square tubes.

How can square tubes be joined?

As a rule, square tubes are connected by welding seams or screw connections, but if you do not have the option of doing this, you can also use one of these tube connectors instead:
