What is Cortenstahl Blech? Cortenstahl is a versatile material that is particularly appreciated for its noble grate look. The unique alloy ensures that a so-called barrier layer is formed under the superficial grate. It consists primarily of components of the steel alloy and ensures that the grate process does not progress. This gives you an authentic grate look without risking structural damage, as the material is reliably protected against further corrosion.
Robust and weatherproof material for outdoor use
Corten is especially suitable for outdoor use. On the one hand, the weather, i.e. the change between wet and dry, is required to form the rusty patina and the protective barrier layer. On the other hand, in this process, rusty water can occur, which drips off from the Cortenstahl plate. This water can then leave annoying spots on the ground.

Durable material with natural patina that gains beauty over time
Patina is called the noble pink surface of cortes. It develops over time and under the influence of weather. This process can take different lengths according to weather conditions, since the sheet metal requires a steady change between wet and dry in order to fully design the grate surface. In principle, however, it can be assumed that it is completed after about 6 months.
However, the process can also be artificially accelerated. Either by using appropriate chemicals, using salt water or by regularly moistening the corten steel sheets in dry weather. In any case, you get the characteristic surface.

Warning notices
- Caution! The sheet metal could have sharp cutting edges that could cut you. As we do not know for what purpose the sheets are used, we unfortunately cannot deburr them without interfering with any weld seam preparations. For this reason, we recommend wearing cut-resistant gloves!
- Keep away from other metals! Corten should never be brought into direct contact with other metals, or in their immediate vicinity, because contact corrosion or cross-contamination can occur. Contact corrosion and contact contamination can weaken the affected metals. Stainless steels are particularly badly affected, as they can lose their non-corrosive properties. Only work with respiratory protection! Steel should only be worked on with appropriate respiratory protection, as metal dust has health risks.
- Weld only with fume extraction! Corten may only be welded with an appropriate fume extraction system and using suitable respiratory protection. The gases produced during welding can cause severe health damage.
- Watch out for stains! The rusty surface can cause permanent stains on the substrate and surfaces in the immediate vicinity.
Care instructions
Corten forms a so-called barrier layer under the rusty surface. Once this barrier layer has formed, the material requires no further care. You can tell whether a barrier layer is present by the fact that the surface is completely covered with rust and the rust no longer changes visually over a longer period of time. In order for the barrier layer to form, the material must regularly alternate between a wet and dry state. This rhythm can occur naturally, through rain and dewdrops, but can also be created artificially through humidification if necessary.
